What’s Happening in Quilting?! 2025 Quilting Trends

The quilting industry is experiencing an exciting period of growth and innovation. As we look forward to 2024-2025, several trends are shaping the landscape of quilting, from the rise in popularity to new techniques and materials.

In this blog post, we’ll explore these current trends, uncover what’s driving this vibrant community, and see how you can be part of this creative evolution.

Is Quilting Growing in Popularity?

Absolutely! Quilting is not just maintaining its popularity but is growing significantly. In 2022, Etsy reported a 30% year-over-year increase in quilt sales! And, the Crafting Industry Alliance reports there are over 85 million “active creatives” who engage in quilting or use quilting techniques in other crafts in the US & Canada alone in 2024.

Here are some factors contributing to its resurgence:

1. Younger Demographics

More young people are discovering quilting, drawn to modern designs, social media inspiration, and the DIY movement. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are brimming with quilting content, making the craft more accessible and trendy. There’s even a “Young & Millennial Quilters” Facebook community with over 50,000 members!

2. Sustainability Movement

Quilting aligns perfectly with the sustainability movement. Many quilters use recycled fabrics, thrifted materials, and even old clothing to create new quilts, embracing an eco-friendly approach to crafting. A HUGE trend in quilting this year will be shopping your fabric stash, using what you already have, patterns that are scrap-friendly, and recycling old quilts into items such as home decor, quilted coats, and sweatshirts.

3. Therapeutic Benefits

The therapeutic benefits of quilting, such as stress relief and mindfulness, are increasingly recognized. During the pandemic, many turned to quilting as a way to cope with anxiety and isolation—a trend that continues to grow.

4. Community and Connection

Quilting communities, both online and offline, offer a sense of belonging and support. Virtual quilting bees, local guilds, and group sew-alongs provide spaces for quilters to share their passion and learn from each other.

This is actually why I created my online quilting community, Quilt Queens! I truly believe that we are not meant to do life or quilting alone and I wanted to create a fun, encouraging place for others to connect and learn to improve their quilting skills.

It’s also why we started Quilted! The Virtual Summit (more on this free quilting event at the end of this blog post!)

What Are the Current Trends in Quilting for 2025?

Let’s dive in to what is IN for 2025!

1. Modern and Minimalist Designs

Modern quilting continues to dominate with its clean lines, bold colors, and minimalist aesthetics. Quilters are experimenting with negative space and geometric patterns to create visually striking pieces. IIf you’re new to modern quilting techniques, start with learning from Amy Smart of Diary of a Quilter (she’s speaking at our virtual summit, Quilted!) and also Denyse Schmidt’s patterns are a great place for bold, modern patterns with big fabric pieces.

2. Sustainable Quilting

Eco-friendly practices are on the rise. From using organic fabrics and natural dyes to repurposing scraps, many quilters are focusing on creating high-quality, long-lasting quilts with a smaller environmental footprint.

One person I really enjoy learning from when it comes to sustainability is Radha Weaver. I met Radha at Elizabeth Chapel’s Quilters Candy Retreat last fall. Radha is the sewist & quilter behind Sewing Through Fog and now the new owner of Feel Good Fibers, which is a secondhand marketplace for fabric and sewing supplies where quilters can buy & sell directly from each other!

3. Technology Integration

Technology is playing a significant role in quilting. Advanced quilting software and digital tools for design planning are becoming more accessible. Additionally, computerized sewing machines and longarm quilting machines are increasingly popular for their precision and efficiency.

One of my favorite tools is the My Quilts App by my friend, Kiley Ferons of Kiley’s Quilt Room. This is a fun, easy-to-use app for your phone that helps you keep all of your quilt projects In one convenient place! (Kiley is also one of our speakers at Quilted! The Virtual Summit)

4. Hand Quilting Revival

There’s a renewed interest in hand quilting, as quilters embrace the slow, meditative process. Hand-stitched quilts are valued for their craftsmanship and unique, personal touch. One blogger I’ve enjoyed watching hand quilting tutorials from is Suzy Quilts!

5. Mixed Media Quilting

Quilters are blending techniques by incorporating embroidery, applique, and fabric painting into their projects. This trend encourages greater creativity and allows quilters to push traditional boundaries. One quilter I really admire in the mixed media and fabric collage space is Susan Carlson!

6. Quilted Garments and Home Decor

Quilting is no longer confined to bedspreads. Quilted jackets, bags, wall hangings, and table runners are gaining popularity, showcasing the versatility of quilting techniques.

If you haven’t seen the wildly popular quilted sweatshirts and quilted coats, these trends are here to stay! If you want to learn how to applique and quilt sweatshirts or fun clothing items, don’t miss Kylyn Stark’s free workshop to this topic at Quilted!, February 4-5!

7. Virtual Quilting Communities

Virtual quilting communities and online classes continue to thrive. These platforms make quilting education accessible and foster global connections among quilters. Quilt-alongs and online challenges are particularly popular, encouraging collective creativity.
